about

“The Writer's Prayer”, a poem by Fay Knowles, was originally published as “The Evergreen Prayer” in the Winter 2013 edition of the British magazine “Evergreen”. Erskine loved Fay’s poem so much he put music to it, Fay added a chorus, and he recorded it as a song.

lyrics

Lord, keep my hands steady so when I get old
I can still write the stories that I’ve never told.
I pray that my brain will be active and keen,
So I can write about the places where I have been.

Let my eyes always be able to see,
So I can read the stories. That’s important to me.
And I pray that I’ll still hear the birds in the trees
And write my poems with verse that will please.

The writer within me always prays
For inspiration and heavenly ways
With God’s help I know I will succeed
To write what generations to come will read

Let me taste the food that will give me strength
To meet my deadlines and write novels at length.
And I pray that my words will be caring and true,
And all of my stories will inspire and renew.

The writer within me always prays
For inspiration and heavenly ways
With God’s help I know I will succeed
To write what generations to come will read

I pray I’ll still smell the sweet summer flowers,
And write about them in my Autumn hours.
And years from now, may what I have written
Be enjoyed by many and never be hidden.

The writer within me always prays
For inspiration and heavenly ways
With God’s help I know I will succeed
To write what generations to come will read
What generations to come will read
